New research on the behavior of Arctic cod in Resolute Bay, Canada revealed unexpected feeding disruptions due to shipping noise. Tagged fish stopped feeding and moved away when ships were present in the bay, perhaps interpreting the noise from ships’ motors as a threat. One of the only forage fish species in the region, Arctic cod are a critical source of food for larger fish, sea birds and marine mammals like whales. As sea ice retreats further north with a warming climate, shipping in the Arctic is increasing, and the likelihood of disrupted marine food webs also increases. These changes have the potential to impact Inuit communities which depend on marine species to meet their subsistence needs.
