Research takes clues from past warming periods to predict what may be in store for the Arctic

In an article published this month, Artic Today looks at the research showing what has happened in past periods of global warming when arctic permafrost melts. The research shows that greenhouse gases contained in the permafrost have accumulated over time, and what has been captured has also been largely retained during stable periods. This indicates that not only could we see melting permafrost result in the release of greenhouse gases, but it could be an amount of greenhouse gases that is higher than what has been recorded in previous warming periods.
